All major biodiversity threats—habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution, and climate change—are driven by human behaviour. This Guidance Paper presents the IUCN SSC CEC Behaviour Change Task Force's position on integrating behaviour change into biodiversity conservation. Behaviour change is central, not peripheral, to conservation work. The paper defines behaviour change, presents frameworks for individual, collective, institutional, and systemic scales, and emphasizes ethical principles fundamental to effective practice.
Developed by 15 experts from academia, zoos, and conservation NGOs, with support from IUCN CEC and the two IUCN SSC Center’s for Species Survival on Behaviour Change: Zoomarine Portugal and The Living Desert.
