Enhancing capacities for high seas biodiversity conservation and sustainable use
IUCN has been entrusted with the implementation of the first component of the EU Global Ocean Programme which aims at enhancing capacities at the regional and global levels on various aspects of ocean governance for Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.
As part of this 20 M EUR effort, IUCN is managing a Technical Assistance Facility, which responds to demand-driven and targeted technical assistance requests. The aim is to develop institutional, legal, and scientific capabilities to participate effectively in biodiversity-related multilateral fora and processes on ABNJ governance (e.g. BBNJ Agreement, CMS, CITES).
This programme will secure IUCN’s role towards effective conservation of marine biodiversity in ABNJ while pursuing complementarity with other existing capacity-building efforts (e.g. GEF, UN DOALOS).
IUCN Members, Commissions experts and Secretariat will be united by this programme, implementing it as a Union to maximise its benefits and positive impacts, on the path to achieving the Global Biodiversity Framework and its target 3 (30x30).
Engage into this large effort today:
- By joining the Pool of experts of the Technical Assistance Facility (TAF), if you are an individual expert.
- By engaging with relevant institutional agencies, bringing to their attention this capacity building opportunity for high seas biodiversity conservation and assist in the possible submission of a TA Request.
