Organiser: Government of Catalonia
Abstract
In September 2021, IUCN introduced a new membership category for subnational governments, recognizing their critical role in creating a sustainable future and protecting biodiversity. Subnational governments play a crucial role in deploying a whole-of-government approach to meet global biodiversity goals. They are uniquely positioned to tailor global biodiversity goals to local contexts, integrating them into local planning and budgeting processes. This localization ensures that global objectives are addressed effectively at the regional level.
This session highlights the importance of multilevel action and showcases successful initiatives by IUCN subnational government members. It aims to inspire other IUCN Members to recognize the potential of subnational governments in biodiversity conservation and encourage increased collaboration between different levels of government and all actors involved.
