Organiser: IUCN Species Survival Commission
The IUCN Species Survival Commission is a science-based network of thousands of volunteer experts from almost every country of the world. With over 10’000 members and 190 Groups covering 186 countries, it is the largest IUCN Commission and was recognised with Guinness World Records Title as the “The largest volunteer conservation-science network”. More than one-quarter of the membership is based in West Europe and an additional 4.5% is based in East Europe, North and Central Asia.
This session will:
- Provide a general overview of SSC structure and work;
- Provide an update on the latest developments of the SSC;
- Identify gaps in membership and find ways to fill these gaps;
- Explore ways to better engage SSC membership across Europe and Central Asia;
- Identify critical issues that deserve particular attention; and
- Discuss ways to ensure that species conservation remains central to the IUCN mission.
The session will be led by Jon Paul Rodriguez (SSC Chair) and Jean-Christophe Vié (SSC Regional Vice Chair for Western Europe). While SSC members are a key component of the expected audience, it is not restricted to SSC members.
The structure of the session is not yet completely finalized but it will mostly include interaction with the audience.
