Thematic Session

Nature-based Solutions for agriculture and climate

Organiser: IUCN French Committee

Intensive agriculture and climate change are main pressures on biodiversity in Europe. In its new programme in preparation, IUCN proposes a vision for food and agricultural systems which states that biodiversity and ecosystem integrity are sustainably and equitably used, conserved and restores in multifunctional agricultural landscapes, contributing to the development of resilient and sustainable food and agricultural systems, human wellbeing and societal benefits.

This vision can be achieved with the implementation of Nature-based Solutions, as defined by IUCN and its standard. Nature-based Solutions can support the ecological transition of agriculture and to demonstrate that objectives of food production and biodiversity conservation can be simultaneously reached. Nature-based Solutions are also an effective response to climate change and disaster risks reduction that are major threats for both agriculture and biodiversity, by building more resilient agroecosystems.

This session will promote and explain the importance of Nature-based Solutions, based on case studies in Europe and outside Europe.
