IUCN and shrinking civic spaces: network consultations with membership from Europe, North and Central Asia

Organiser: IUCN Civic Space Taskforce

Contact persons Peter Larsen (CEESP, University of Geneva), Chris Mahon (IUCN Global Group for National and Regional Committee Development) and Ruben Khachatryan (FPWC, Armenia)

Description
IUCN membership in several countries faces shrinking spaces for engaging effectively and equitably in conservation policy practice. A global IUCN survey and dialogues undertaken at the RCF in Rotterdam revealed this as a deepening crisis challenging both NGO members and Commissions in the region. This network consultation meeting in Brugge will serve to present the recently established Global Group’s Civic Space Task Force, present key findings from the region and consult the ENCA membership on the next steps in preparation for the World Conservation Congress and the Motions process. IUCN Members interested in joining the process are invited to attend the meeting and form part of an emerging global network.

  • Introduction to the Global Group Task Force on Civic Spaces, Chris Mahon (Chair of the Global Group for National and Regional Committee Development)

  • Evolving dynamics in the Europe, North and Central Asia region: key research findings, Peter Bille Larsen (Institute of Sociological Research, University of Geneva)

  • Experience with the Motions process at WDC in Marseille and the next steps, Ruben Khachatryan (Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets)

  • Open discussion
