Organisers: IUCN Global Protected and Conserved Areas; IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation; Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (IUCN State member in Türkiye); Nature Conservation Centre, Doğa Koruma Merkezi, DKM (IUCN member in Türkiye); Barcelona Provincial Council, Diputació de Barcelona (IUCN Affiliate member in Spain)
Objectives
- Harness the power of the IUCN Union, our standards and safeguards to increase partnerships and collaboration to support the delivery of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (Targets 3 and 4) using appropriate technology and digital solutions; and
- Showcase examples of appropriate technology and digital solutions that support fair and effective area-based and species conservation.
The Tech4Nature partnership was initiated by IUCN and Huawei in 2020. Tech4Nature provides knowledge, technology and resources to flagship and satellite protected and conserved areas worldwide to support their IUCN Green List journey and achieve nature conservation results evaluated through digital technology.
One of the key objectives of Tech4Nature is to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing to scale and accelerate fair and effective area-based and species conservation using appropriate technology and digital solutions. We can advance this together by harnessing the power of the IUCN Union, our standards and safeguards.
The Session will showcase solutions that accelerate data collection and processing, support evidence-based actionable decision-making, and empower governments, local communities, environmental organisations, and the public to take more effective conservation action in and around protected and conserved areas. The session will explore how their application can be scaled and accelerated through dynamic collaborations between the information and communications technology (ICT) and nature conservation sectors.
By bringing together practitioners (conservationists and technologists), policymakers, and donors, the session will delve into the practical and policy considerations of innovative technology and digital solutions to address global societal challenges and find innovative ways to conserve, manage, and restore ecosystems.
Why attend
Learn about innovative technology and digital solutions that – when combined with participatory, multi-stakeholder processes – can transform biodiversity conservation and contribute to the delivery of fair and effective area-based and species conservation. IUCN constituents in Europe, North and Central Asia will engage with experts and practitioners from the ICT and nature conservation sectors, develop and strengthen their networks, and explore collaborative opportunities to continue to bridge the know-how and innovation from the ICT sector for fair and effective area-based and species conservation.

Breakout groups to engage in pre-defined questions, and then reconvene in one session and share takeaways from the 3 breakouts. Guiding questions may include:
- (IUCN’s) ongoing efforts to integrate technology into conservation strategies in the ENCA Region. What are some examples of successful conservation projects in ENCA Region that have leveraged technology? What lessons can be learned from these case studies to apply to other ecosystems and species in the ENCA Region?
- Ethical considerations. What ethical considerations should be considered when using technology in conservation? How can we ensure that the use of technology respects the rights and traditions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities?
- What’s next? What technologies and digital solutions hold the most promise for conservation efforts in ENCA? How can we foster innovation and the adoption of appropriate technologies in the conservation sector?
