Thematic session

Challenges, solutions and policy relevance of national red listing

Organisers: ICENCA, IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands, Zoological Society London,  Leo Foundation, Floron Foundation and other partners

National Red Lists play a crucial role in our species protection policies. They are important not only as indicators, but also as tools for sound and unambiguous communication between governments and all other parties involved in species protection. National species protection policies and the protection plans resulting from them are largely based on these Red Lists and the studies underpinning them.

During this RCF session, we will present the results of a workshop organized on Friday 27 September at the Institute of Forest and Nature (INBO) in Brussels. The workshop was organized as an initiative of the Interregional Committee for Europe and North and Central Assia (ICENCA) and covered all IUCN regions of the committee in collaboration with the IUCN regional Offices, as well as the IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), IUCN SSC, IUCN Red List Unit Cambridge, IUCN National Red List Working Group, The Leo foundation, and the Belgian Biodiversity Platform. It was agreed that the results of this workshop will be presented at the RCF24ENCA.

During this thematic session, we will:

  • Launch of the IUCN Guidelines for Establishing a National Red List Programme;
  • Present the findings and the takeaway messages from the workshop on the best practice of national red listing held on Friday 27 September at INBO Brussels and the role of the national red list hub and website of the Zoological Society London.
  • Discuss the latest recommendations for better preparation of national Red Listing across the ICENCA regions and their role in underpinning the National Species Protection Plans in Europe, the BDS 2030, and the KM-GBF delivery.
  • During the second session organised back to back with this one (15.30-16.30 on 30 Sept) we will explore and discuss the resources, capacity, best practices, and challenges for the development, resourcing, maintenance, and governance of National Red Lists for Pollinators in support of the EU and Global Pollinators Conservation-related policy development and implementation.
