The IUCN Secretariat and its commissions, alongside Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy and Oceano Azul Foundation, would like to invite you to a webinar to touch base on deep seabed mining (DSM) issues in 2025. The webinar will first take a look at the state of play of DSM negotiations which are set to resume with the ISA Council in March, before exploring the key findings from the recent paper entitled “A Pause or Moratorium for Deep Seabed Mining in the Area? The Legal Basis, Potential Pathways, and Possible Policy Implications” which focuses on what it means to implement a precautionary pause or a moratorium on deep-seabed mining.

Speakers:

  • Pradeep Singh (Senior Project Lead for International Advocacy at the Oceano Azul Foundation, Lead of the Deep Seabed Mining Thematic Group of the IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management and Deputy Chair of the World Commission on Environmental Law’s Ocean Law Specialist Group)

  • Aline Jaeckel (Associate Professor at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia)

  • Jeff Ardron (Africa Oceans Director for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Mombasa, Kenya)
