Pollinators are essential to global food systems and natural ecosystems. But how much do we actually know about them?
While pollinator declines are well documented in Europe and North America, comparable data remains scarce across the tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa, South America and Southeast Asia, where many of the globally traded commodities are sourced from. This leaves the world's most biodiverse regions without the baseline evidence needed to guide conservation policy and safeguard global supply chains and related food security and livelihoods dependencies.
A new assessment addresses this gap, examining insect pollinators associated with 112 key tropical and subtropical crops, drawing on over 5,000 documented interactions across 1,790 species.
