Online meeting 1: Why does animal culture matter for conservation?

Matilde MONTAGNA

This webinar is part of a global consultation process to introduce the concept of animal culture and its relevance to conservation. It highlight existing research across diverse taxa, present leadership efforts by the scientific community, the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), and showcase the work of the recently established SSC/CEESP Task Force for the Conservation of Animal Culture. The webinar will also share updates on IUCN’s collaborative project with the task force and the Arcus Foundation.

Through a combination of short presentations and an interactive dialogue, the webinar will foster knowledge exchange and support thoughtful, responsible ways of integrating animal culture into conservation policy and practice. Speakers will include representatives from the Arcus Foundation, co-chairs of the SSC/CEESP Task Force, the CMS Secretariat, the SSC Working Group on Chimpanzee Culture, members of the CMS Expert Group and SSC Specialist Groups, as well as Indigenous perspectives.
