Addressing the barriers to Indigenous and local community-led governance of protected and conserved areas in Africa

Cécile FATTEBERT

This webinar presents a forthcoming IUCN WCPA Issues Paper about the barriers to Indigenous and local community-led governance of protected and conserved areas globally, and types of actions that can help to address those barriers, produce a shift in conservation practice and advance recognition of local leadership.

The paper has been produced by members of the IUCN CEESP/WCPA Taskforce on Advancing protected and conserved area governance led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and jointly funded through the European Union, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the German Agency for International Development (GIZ) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

This webinar will present the key ideas and recommendations from the paper, and apply those to African contexts by focusing on selected case studies and experiences of contributors to the paper, specifically from Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. The format will include an engaging panel discussion involving Indigenous and local community representatives and practitioners reflecting on their experiences and describing the kinds of actions and roles that different conservation actors can take to enhance recognition, collaboration and conservation outcomes. At least a third of the time will be allocated to participant involvement through an open question, answer and discussion session. Questions and comments posted in the chat will be moderated and responded to throughout the session by co-authors of the report.
